For SSDI recipients you have a 9 month (plus a 3 month grace period) Trial Work Period that will allow you to make as much as you want and keep your benefits. After you have used your Trial Work Period benefits, if you earn over Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) amount of $1,310 ($2,190 if you’re blind) your benefits stop. However, if at any time during the next 36 months your earnings drop below the SGA amount you are eligible to get your SSDI benefits back without filing a new application. This period is referred to as the Extended Period of Eligibility.
For SSI recipients SSA will reduce your SSI benefit 50 cents for every dollar you earn over $85.
If you stop working anytime within five years of when your disability benefits stopped, you may be able to get your benefits restarted without reapplying. This is called Expedited Reinstatement to have your benefits started again without having to complete a new application.
